C-19 Tech: Just how powerful is Zoom now?

Tuesday 7 April 2020

Duration: 6:30PM - 7:30PM

Status: Completed

As the pandemic swept the world, so did Zoom. Out of pure and immediate necessity, video conferencing shed its long-held reputation as the dreaded, poor cousin of ‘real life’ business literally overnight. Zoom’s stock has doubled since January while the rest of the S&P500 has shrunk 25%. But who are Zoom? What data do they have? Is the platform safe? And just how powerful – and rich – will the pandemic make them?

Our special guests include:

James Ball is a British journalist and author. He has worked for The Guardian, WikiLeaks, BuzzFeed, The New European and The Washington Post and is the author of The Infographic History of the World, Post-Truth: How Bullshit Conquered the World and Bluffocracy. He is the recipient of several awards for journalism and was a member of The Guardian team which won the Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism.

Chair: James Harding, Editor and Co-founder, Tortoise

How does a digital ThinkIn work?

A digital ThinkIn is like a video conference, hosted by a Tortoise editor, that takes place at the advertised time of the event. Digital ThinkIns are new to Tortoise. Now that our newsroom has closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, we feel it’s more important than ever that we ‘get together’ to talk about the world and what’s going on.

The link to join the conversation will be emailed to you after you have registered for your free ticket to attend. When you click the link, you enter the digital ThinkIn and can join a live conversation from wherever you are in the world.

Remember to allow notifications from Tortoise in your phone’s settings so we can remind you when the digital ThinkIn is about to start.
