Corona-comedy: why do we laugh in a crisis?

Thursday 9 April 2020

Duration: 6:30PM - 7:30PM

Status: Completed

Let’s be clear, C-19 is not funny. But, stuck indoors for months either alone or with family, this crisis is the moment of truth for the famous British sense of humour. Fake news might spread like wildfire across social media, but so do the best jokes. From bears patrolling Aldi to the Baked Potato song, the gags make us smile, make us think and – ultimately – help us cope. What’s your favourite corona-comedy moment so far?

Our special guests include:

Edith, resident cartoonist, Tortoise

Matt, cartoonist, The Telegraph

John Lloyd CBE, award-winning TV producer and writer of Spitting Image and QI. He has worked on shows including The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Blackadder and Not the Nine O’Clock News.

Chair: Merope Mills, Editor and Partner, Tortoise

How does a digital ThinkIn work?

A digital ThinkIn is like a video conference, hosted by a Tortoise editor, that takes place at the advertised time of the event. Digital ThinkIns are new to Tortoise. Now that our newsroom has closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, we feel it’s more important than ever that we ‘get together’ to talk about the world and what’s going on.

The link to join the conversation will be emailed to you after you have registered for your free ticket to attend. When you click the link, you enter the digital ThinkIn and can join a live conversation from wherever you are in the world.

Remember to allow notifications from Tortoise in your phone’s settings so we can remind you when the digital ThinkIn is about to start.
