Just when Johnson hoped it would be safe to go back to the pub, the Indian variant set off the same alarm bells as other variants did in January and September and last March. The cliché is surely true: no one’s safe till everyone is safe. So how do we overcome vaccine hesitancy, production bottlenecks and the massive structural obstacle of a rich world / poor world divide to get vaccines into enough arms quickly enough to prevent Covid mutating its way round every defence we have?
